New Citizen!
At work, I have the opportunity to tutor a married couple from Somalia. Their names are Hassan and Fatuma, and they came to Utah as refugees about 6 years ago. They had never gone to school in their lives, and it is amazing to see how far they've come! Last November Hassan told me that he would like my help preparing to take the citizenship exam. For the exam, applicants are tested on their speaking, reading, and writing skills, and they are expected to learn the answers to 100 questions about American history and government. Most native-born Americans couldn't answer all of those questions! Hassan studied non-stop, day and night for several months. I have never seen a person so dedicated to learning!! All of his studying and hard work paid off this summer when he passed the exam! I have never been more proud or excited. I got to attend his oath ceremony with Fatuma and their adorable grandkids.
